Hersey, John Richard (1914–1993)

Born in Tientsin, China, on June 17, 1914; lived in US after 1925; war correspondent in Pacific Theater and Italy during World War II; 1944 published novel A Bell for Adano, which received the Pulitzer Prize in 1945; in 1950, novel The Wall about the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto; in 1963, volume of journalistic pieces called Here to Stay, including "Tattoo Number 107,907" about Norbert Wollheim; died in Key West, Florida, on March 24, 1993.
